Investigating the fragility of our landscapes, Disappearing Acts presents two unique shows that explore loss of biodiversity through circus, clowning, and sound making. Inspired by conversations with environmental scientist Ayesha Tulloch these two works are versatile and designed to insert themselves into green spaces to ask audiences to look, listen and notice environments differently. Using a van as a mobile performance site and modified for each show, the van arrives, the performers tumble out and set up to present their story. They are a fleeting change to the landscape, packing up and leaving to conclude each presentation.
Bush Camouflage is presented by circus performer Abbey Church and sound artist, Jodie Rottle. Two construction workers arrive and set up to try and find the birds they need to understand each other better. Together they create a circus, movement and sound performance that calls to the birds as they reconcile their urban personas to this green landscape and to each other in it. Length 45 minutes.
Birds of a Feather is presented by circus performer, Mayu Muto and clown, Phoebe Manning, as Joyce and Denise – two citizen scientists who are passionate about birds and want to invite the audience to join them in their bird adventure, with magic, storytelling, circus and dance. Together they explain their passion and encourage your participation in saving our precious species. Length 50 minutes.
It is quirky and engaging performance that asks us to reflect on our relationship with nature, how we value the birds, and the wild spaces that support them.
