Agitate Arts Incubator

An ongoing program that supports the creation of new works and artist cross-pollination

Agitate is an annual program that supports artists at any career stage to create a short new work. Depending on available funding some years artists are also supplied with a small stipend to cover production costs. Each year the project is divided into three stages:

Creative Intensive
Participating artists meet for a week of creating workshops with an industry leader in the field of independent performance making. This creative intensive allows for participants to be exposed to new ways of making and to start exploring the initial spark that will drive their work.

Guided Creation
Participants attend a weekly session at the Vulcana Arts Hub where they undertake the creative, technical and physical work of forming a short performance piece. Vulcana provides support across many areas including dramaturgy, technical production, costuming and problem solving to assist these artists in developing their pieces.

Presentation
After 2 months of work these pieces are presented tot he public over 2 nights of cabarets. This gives artists the chance to feel how an audience responds to their piece and to receive valuable feedback.

Agitate 2024

Intensive17th – 21st April
Agitate 2024 was kicked of with a week long creative intensive with circus performer and director Malia Walsh. Malia Walsh is a multi award winning Victorian Producer with over 12 years experience touring Physical theatre, Circus and Children’s entertainment regionally, nationally and internationally. This intensive allowed participants to learn about Malia’s creative process and to take time to reflect on initial inspiration for their own creative work.

Incubator May – June
In the incubator period artists met weekly at Vulcana to explore and refine their work with the guidance of Meanjin Artist Sammy Williams and Vulcana artistic director Celia White. The incubator staged also allowed for peer-to-peer feedback and cross pollination of ideas. As well as directorial support Vulcana supported artists to bring about technical, production and costuming ideas.

Cabarets 29th June & 6th July
The Agitate Cabarets, held at the Vulcana Arts Hub, allowed artists to present their pieces to a supportive audience and gain valuable insight into how their ideas were interpreted and absorbed by viewers.

The cabarets also provided participants with an opportunity to receive video and photographic collateral which is vital part in the future life of these new artistic works. .
